Victoria Johnson

Victoria Johnson, violin, electric violin, live electronic works with improvisation, music technology and interdisciplinarity in her musical work. She studied violin in Oslo, Vienna and London, and debuted in Oslo with pieces from both the standard repertoire for violin and music from the 20th century. She has performed as a soloist with a number of different orchestras, and has also participated in international chamber music festivals. She has been group leader in the orchestra at the Norwegian Opera, and left to concentrate on her own projects.

Since 1995, she has mainly concentrated on contemporary music. Victoria has been an active chamber musician in the string duo Kyberia and Ametri string quartet. These ensembles have two fiddler-nominated CD recordings behind them. Since 1999, Victoria has worked with interdisciplinary projects, in collaboration with i.a. composers, researchers, video artists and clothing designers.

The main project in recent years has been Electric Violin in the digital space. Victoria has commissioned and performed 12 works for solo electric violin and electronics, and some of the works premiered at the Autunnale Festival in Bergen in September 2003. Since then, she has continued to develop repertoire for the instrument in collaboration with Norwegian and foreign composers. . The solo business has included concerts at the Ultima Festival, the Soundwaves Festival in Brighton, Brasswind in Bergen, Tou Scene, Nordic Music Days in Reykjavik and the Borealis Festival.

In October 2007, she started in a three-year PhD position at the Norwegian Academy of Music through the Scholarship program for artistic development work ended with a dissertation in June 2012. She collaborates with the composer and laptop musician Diemo Schwarz and released her first solo CD in June 2012. She also teaches violin at the Barrat Due Music Institute and holds workshops and presentations.
