Jonathan Aasgaard

Jonathan Aasgaard from Oslo is solo cellist in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and in the Sinfonia of London. He is also invited both as a group leader and soloist in a number of British and European orchestras. As an educator, he holds the position of ‘Professor of Cello’ at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. In addition, he is a busy chamber musician with concerts all over the world.

He has collaborated with pianists Boris Giltburg, Simon Trpceski and Joanna Mac Gregor. Along with these, he has given concerts around Europe, the Middle East, Japan, South Korea and the United States, and to a number of international festivals. Other chamber music partners have included violinists Julian Rachlin, Nigel Kennedy and Henning Kraggerud, viola Lawrence Power and cellists Yo Yo Ma and Giovanni Sollima.

He has made several recordings, both works for cello and orchestra and cello sonatas. His recording of Brahms 'cello sonatas with Martin Roscoe was "editors' choice" in Gramaphone magazine.

His repertoire is very extensive and includes many new works for cello and orchestra, music with live electronics and improvisation.

Jonathan Aasgaard plays a cello by Celeste Farotti, built in Milan in 1926.
