Sophie Arbuckle

Ms. Arbuckle has served on the viola faculty of Juilliard pre-college since
2009. Her students have appeared as soloists with the Seattle Symphony,
the New York Philharmonic, Little Orchestra Society, the New York
Chamber Players and the Mainz Kammerorchester among others. They
have won such competitions as the Young Arts, Seattle Symphony Young
Artist Award, From the Top, the Bruce Montgomery Foundation for the Arts,
and the Ronald Sachs International Music Competition. They have served
as principal violists in the New York Youth Symphony and the National
Youth Orchestra.

Ms. Arbuckle has served as a jury member of the
International Johannes Brahms Competition in Portschach, Austria, both in
the viola and chamber music categories, for many years until its recent
closing. She has been a visiting guest professor of viola at the University of
Minho in Braga, Portugal, and has given masterclasses in Portugal, France
and Germany. She has served as a faculty artist in numerous festivals
including Astona International, the Académie Internationale de Musique à
Paris, Artave ESMAE (Portugal), Interharmony (Germany), Music@Menlo
(CA, USA), the Killington Music Festival & the Green Mountain Music
Festival (Vermont, USA).

Ms. Arbuckle has been described as “possessing flamboyantly responsive,
flexible and supple viola playing” (Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany). She
has performed extensively in all the major concert halls throughout the
U.S., Canada, and Europe and has appeared in many of the most
prominent chamber music settings in the U.S. and Europe, including
Music@Menlo (CA), Bargemusic (NY), Fêtes Musicales de Savoie
(France), Festival des Arcs (France), Caramoor Festival (USA), and
Académie Internationale de musique (France), Radio broadcasts with
Radio France. Solo appearances with the Belgorade Orchestra (France),
Mainz Kammerorchester (Germany) and the Sudbury Symphony (Canada).
