Bach's Heritage
Johann Sebastian Bach has uplifted and inspired generations of musicians and listeners for centuries, and is considered by many to be the greatest composer in history. In the tranquility of Ulnes Church, the doors open to a musical space where the festival's musicians can explore and play with Bach's expressions, in new sounds and unexpected variations.
The evening is woven together by Bach's own masterpieces and works by two composers who have both been deeply inspired by his form and timeless harmonies: Max Richter and Benjamin Britten. In their works, we hear a clear echo of Bach's legacy – a musical resonance that both renews and continues his universe.
The concert opens with Atle Sponberg and Knut Erik Sundquist's own version of some of the Goldberg Variations. The next to be inspired by the great master is Terje Tønnesen and his Surabandabach, before Max Richter's On the Nature of Daylight unfolds into a warm and cinematic soundscape. Terje Tønnesen then introduces his interpretation of Bach's monumental Chaconne, which takes on a unique character when combined with the voices of Ann-Helen Moen and Guro Thronæs-Sivertsen. Britten follows with his first cello suite – a work that both honors and challenges tradition.
Finally, the entire string ensemble comes together in Bach's beloved Double Concerto, where the festival's musicians meet in a pulsating and lively community.
An evening of immersion, playfulness, virtuosity – and Bach as you've never heard him before.
