Masterclass with Stephan Barratt-Due

What is it that creates tone, timbre and character – before we even start talking about sheet music? In The Magic Bow, Stephan Barratt-Due demonstrates why the bow is the violinist’s most important tool, and how small adjustments can yield significant musical results.
The audience gets a front-row seat as he works with a group of violinists: tone, articulation, bowing and control – everything that usually takes place ‘behind the scenes’ on the path to concert performance. This is an in-depth session for those with a particular interest who wish to see the craft up close.
Stephan Barratt-Due is one of Norway's most prominent violinists and educators. He made his debut in 1981 and has since had an active career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra leader, touring in Europe, the US, South America, and Asia. Since 1985, he has been rector and artistic director of the Barratt Due Music Institute, a role in which he has had a major impact on the development of Norwegian talent; several of today's leading Norwegian violinists have been his students.
Barratt-Due has also held key artistic positions, including artistic director of the Oslo Camerata since 1998 and the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra from 1990 to 1996. He has been awarded both the Oslo City Culture Prize and the Norwegian Culture Council's Honorary Prize, as well as the Order of St. Olav for his work in Norwegian music.
This master class provides a direct insight into his working methods and the process behind the interpretations and technical choices of young musicians.
