How does a young musician become ‘ready for competition’ – and what is it that really makes one candidate stand out? In this masterclass, Gordon Back opens the door to the rehearsal room ahead of those big moments on stage. Back was Artistic Director of the Menuhin Competition for twenty years (2002–2022) and has been closely involved with the competition ever since its first edition in 1983.
With experience as an official competition pianist and as a collaborator with many of the world’s leading soloists, he reveals what lies behind a compelling performance: long-term planning, repertoire selection, mental preparation – and the details that make the music “resonate” in the room. Back also offers a rare insight into how juries work, what they listen for, and how the performance is assessed as a whole – from the first note to the final bow stroke.
Gordon Back is one of Europe's most renowned pianists and teachers, known for his long association with Yehudi Menuhin and as artistic director of the Menuhin Competition for 20 years. He has accompanied and worked with some of the world's leading violinists and cellists, and his international career spans several continents with numerous recordings and significant collaborations. As a teacher and masterclass instructor, he is in high demand at leading institutions, and his ability to convey both musical insight and artistic inspiration makes his encounters with young talents particularly rewarding.
