Music of life and death – with Morten Jentoft
TrondheimSolistene, Eastern Europe, music and culture
Eastern Europe is a region where history still leaves its mark on everyday life, and few Norwegian journalists know the region better than Morten Jentoft, who has served two terms as a correspondent in the former Soviet Union and has covered Ukraine for more than 30 years. When Jentoft talks about the region, he does so without romanticizing or simplifying. He has stood in backyards, train stations, and ruins, listening to people talk about lives that rarely make the headlines.
He brings these experiences with him to the concert—not as a lecture, but as small windows into places and events that still characterize the area. In this unique concert, Jentoft and TrondheimSolistene take the audience on a musical journey where poignant music and insightful stories show how Eastern Europe's history has been the backdrop for art that still touches us today.
TrondheimSolistene approaches the music with an understanding that these are not just “works,” but expressions from composers who wrote with history close to their hearts. Janáček's restlessness, Bacewicz's precision, Silvestrov's almost transparent silence, and Shostakovich's darkness take on a different weight when Jentoft's stories are in the back of your mind. This is not a concert that attempts to explain Eastern Europe, but one that allows us to get a sense of what has shaped it.
